Dr. Oz. spoke on Chlorophyll. But What Is It?

www.natureopath.com

Dr. Murray says “Chlorophyll is the green pigment of plants found in the chloroplast of plant cells, where electromagnetic energy (light) is converted to chemical energy through the process known as photosynthesis. The chlorophyll molecule is essential for this reaction to occur. Natural chlorophyll found in green plants is fat-soluble. The majority of the chlorophyll products found in health food stores, however, contain water-soluble chlorophyll. To produce water-soluble chlorophyll, the natural chlorophyll molecule must be altered chemically. The fat-soluble form, the natural form of chlorophyll as found in green vegetables and other plants, offers several advantages over water-soluble chlorophyll. Most important, fat-soluble chlorophyll can stimulate hemoglobin and red blood cell production, while water-soluble chlorophyll cannot.

In fact, it is interesting to note that the chlorophyll molecule is very similar to the heme portion of the hemoglobin molecule of our red blood cells. Because water-soluble chlorophyll is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, its use is limited to soothing the gastrointestinal tract and reducing fecal odor. It is used in reducing the fecal odor associated with a colostomy, which involves the removal of the colon and its replacement with a small collection bag outside the body. The beneficial effect of water-soluble chlorophyll in this case is largely due to its astringent qualities, that is, its ability to attract water.”
